Pauli Murray with Roy, whom she met in a veterinarian’s office, waiting to be put down after a hit-and-run driver had crushed his left hind leg. Murray could not bear the thought of Roy dying alone, so she took him home and nursed him. He rallied, and Murray had his leg surgically repaired. Roy would run, swim, and happily fetch sticks until his death a decade later. (Courtesy of Milton Williams)
